I will be continuing my blog through my website…www.kristarobertson.com
Packing up and getting ready to move! So exciting to pack up my “living room corner studio” and get ready to move it into it’s own room! AND get back to work sculpting. I have been on a sculpting break while building our new house. It is so much work, but I have learned to do electrical, insulation, drywall mudding, staining, painting, flooring…and we are almost near the end, finally!
Feb 2011 – We have finally moved into our new house. Been away from sculpting for almost 6 months and I am now starting to unpack and set up in my new studio room. So nice to be back to working on art dolls again.
My old studio started with a couple little tables in the corner of my living room and by 2007 it looked like this:
Then in 2009 I added more space and it was heaven to be able to have separate areas for sculpting, painting, applying hair and sparkles…even though the space was still a bit cramped.
Now in 2011 we have moved and I have my own studio room. Joy!! Just starting to unpack…
I really want to change my studio name and simplify everything using my name as part of the title. Having my blog, studio, ebay, etsy, email, and anything else related all use the same name so it is less confusing for people.
So, something with “Krista Robertson” in the title, like “Krista Robertson Studio” but that is all I can think of!
Please post your comments or suggestions for any new names you might think of =)
It has been a few months since I have had fairies for sale on ebay regularly. Some people have been wondering what I am up to. We are in the process of building/finishing our house and moving. Taking so much longer than we planned as we are doing much of the work ourselves. Getting closer now!
I have tons of pictures on facebook if anyone want to see. Just send me an email and I’ll let you in =)
Will be moving my ‘studio’ out of the corner of our living room and into my new studio room! So very excited to get back to my daily sculpting work…soon.
This fairy drawing is how I try to sculpt my fairy doll sculptures. To me the style looks quite different, but there is a huge size difference so that could be why (sculpture heads are 1″ high, this drawing head is 3″ high)
I will be painting this drawing with watercolors. I am very new to watercolors so we’ll how this goes! Also cracked open my new (and first) block of Arches hot pressed 140lb watercolor paper. Been so scared to try it out and mess up so the paper block has sat on the shelf for ages!
I’m trying out a lightbox using 3 daylight florescent bulbs. Can’t seem to get it bright enough, but not too bad. My previous pictures are all taken outdoors in the shade. Which ones look better? The indoor lightbox or the outdoor pictures?
Next I used a darker grey background in the lightbox, helped to brighten up the picture (thanks Joanna!). Now it is still slightly too bright, but about equal to the outdoor pictures.
To all my current, previous and potential customers;
I just sat down and carefully calculated my expenses vs my ebay listing price and was surprised to find that my take home pay is only half of the legal hourly minimum wage! (ebay listing price minus ebay fees, paypal fees, shipping cost, supplies, etc)
I would really like to be making at least minimum wage, so I can continue creating art dolls as my source of income. Because of this, I will be listing my fairies at a higher starting price from now on.
My apologies if anyone is now out of their budget range, but I would not ask anyone else to work for less than minimum wage, even if it was something they loved doing! I sincerely hope that everyone understands my situation, and is still able to enjoy my sculptures.
